What is Guangchangwu?
Chinese square dancing, or guangchangwu, is not the partner-based American folk dance called square dance. It is a music-led group fitness practice usually performed in public parks, plazas, and residential open spaces.
Definition
Guangchangwu (广场舞, guǎngchǎng wǔ) literally means “plaza dance.” In practice it refers to collective dance routines performed to recorded music in open public spaces — a blend of exercise, dance and social participation that is woven into everyday urban life in China.
Participation is predominantly middle-aged and older adults, and especially popular among women — but it is not exclusive to them. Men, younger participants and performance-oriented teams also take part.
